Study Permit

Study Permit

If you are planning to take courses that are 6 months or longer, you need a study permit. If you would like to study beyond the validity of your current study permit, you have to extend it before your current one expires.

In order to apply for a study permit, you need to get a letter of acceptance "designated learning institutions (DLI)" All primary and secondary schools in Canada are designated learning institutions.

Work Permit

Work Permit

In most cases, you need a work permit if you would like to work in Canada. First, employer has to apply for a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) then you can apply for a work permit if LMIA is approved.

PGWP

Post-graduation work permit (PGWP)

You may be eligible for a post-graduation work permit (PGWP) if you graduated from a designated learning institution (DLI).

PGWP is an open work permit and you can work for any employers.

How long your PGWP is valid for depends on the length of your study program.

 

For example

  • if you completed a 10-month program, your PGWP will be valid for 10 months.

  • If you completed a 2-year program, your PGWP will be valid for 3 years.

  • If your program was less than 8 months, you are NOT eligible for a PGWP.

Working Holiday

Working Holiday

This is an open work permit and you can work for any employers. You can also study for less than 6 months.

Visitor Record

Visitor Record

(Visitor Extension)

If you are in Canada as a visitor and would like to extend your stay, or you are in Canada on a study or work permit and you would like to stay longer after your current permit expires, you have to apply for an extension or to change your status as a visitor.

Visitor Visa (Temporary Resident Visa)
If you are from one of the visa-required countries, you have to apply for a visitor visa to visit Canada or transit through a Canadian airport.

Super Visa

Super Visa

If you would like to visit your children or grandchildren who are Canadian citizens or permanent residents in Canada, you may want to get Super Visa. This will allow you to stay in Canada for up to 2 years.

eTA

Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA)

Visa-exempt foreign nationals need an eTA to fly to or transit through a Canadian airport.

You can apply online and the fee is CAD $7.

 

An eTA is valid for up to 5 years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first.

Restoration

Restoration

If a visitor, worker or student has lost their status, they can apply to restore their status within 90 days.

Clients applying for a restoration must pay the restoration fee $200 (+ study or work permit fee).

LMIA

Labout Market Impact Assessment (LMIA)

In order to hire a foreign worker, an employer has to apply for an LMIA and prove that he or she could not find a Canadian citizen or permanent resident for the position.

 

If LMIA is approved, foreign worker can apply for a work permit.
